II. PSYCHOLOGISTS COMING TO SLOVENIA

l. Can you use the professional title «Psiholog» or «Diplomirani psiholog» in Slovenia based on a foreign degree or do special prerequisites have to be fullfilled for this? Do any laws exist on this?

The "Diplomirani psiholog" is protected in a republican law (Zakon o strokovnih naslovih. Urani list RS Nº 21/1971, 7/1986). See Yugoslav federal law /Zakon o strokovnih naslovih in akademskih stopnjah Uradni list SFRJ No 13/1963). The same federal law in 1963 determined post-graduate titles «magister» and «specialist».

The title «diplomirani psiholog» con be used if the title is recognízed by the University of Ljubljana

2. Does a degree in psychology obtained abroad have to be recognized in order for a psychologist to work in Slovenia as a psychologist? Are there any laws on it?

Yes, in order to work in the field of psychology, psychologists who took a degree in psychology in foreign country must have Their degree recognized Recognition is provided by the Faculty of arts and Science, Askerceva 2, 61000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

3. How is an acadermic trainig and a degree in psychology obtained abroad recognized in Slovenia and by whom?

A degree in psychologv obtained abroad would be recognized by Faculta of Arts and Science.

The equivalence of academic training abroad would also be recognized by the same institution

4. Has Slovenia impleinented the EU Directive 89/48 and what examinations or supplementary courses need to be taken?

Slovenia has not yet implemented EU Directive 89148 There are neither examinations nor supplementary courses for psychologists.

5. What practical training or observer-status opportunities exist in Slovenia for psychologists who wish to accumulate experience for a limited period of time?

Practical trainee and observer-status trainee opponunities exist in all areas of the psychology profession (clincs, institutions, authorities, companies) although they are not equally organised in all these areas One who is employed for the first time in the field of psychology has to pass obligatory one year practicar training under supervision At the end of this year one has to pass the professional exam.

The Department of Psychology at the Facully of Arts and Science, University of Ljubljana offers everything except specialization in clinical psychology. The Faculty of Medicine offers specialization in clinicalpsychology.

In the field of clinical psychologv post graduate programmes are of particular importance since they are usually necessary in order to obtain the necessary professional qualifications to practice clinical psychology

In the field of clinical psychology.

7. What are work opportunities like for psychologists in Slovenia?

There aree approximately 30 unemployed psychologists in Slovenia So, the work opportunties are not especially good

Members of Slovene Psychological Association receive the association´s journal «Horizons of psychology». They can get free legal advice, professional consulting and various information.
